Part Five:
The Gift

Debbie knocked on the door to the apartment, and Kaila raced to the door. ìComing!î she called out as she stumbled from the bar, which she had been using all morning as a computer desk. She saved her work before darting to the door. She peered out the peephole in the door before a grin spread like wildfire across her face. Kaila unlocked both of the locks on the door, and pulled it open with a gracious bow.

ìWell! Looks like someone is feeling better!î Debbie smiled and tossed her armload of packages onto the couch. She grabbed her friend up in a huge hug, and Kaila returned it, smiling widely. ìHow was your day, darling?î Debbie moved to close and lock the door. In the process, she glanced at the clock which read 6:45.

ìWonderful!î Kaila exclaimed, picking up the edge of a shopping back between her thumb and index finger before peeking into it like a little kid would do on Christmas. ìI finished my novel, Deb! Maybe I can get my job back now!î

Debbie smiled as Kaila went on and on about her day and began to pull things out of the bags. She walked around the couch and took a seat, pulling various things out of her friendís reach. She shook her finger at Kaila, and as soon as the girl was quiet for a moment, Debbie held up a finger.

ìBefore you continue, I have something for you,î Debbie spoke before pulling a large cardboard box out from one bag, and then a smaller one out from another. She handed them to Kaila, who took them with wide eyes. Before waiting for the blessing to begin, Kaila pulled the top off of the bigger box and gasped. Inside of the box lay a red dressÖthe mother of all red dresses.

Kaila pulled the dress out of the box, standing up to get a better look at it. As she stood, the dress unfolded itself, showing her its flowing skirt. Kaila was in awe of the dress. She held it by the hangar, and noted that it was a halter top. As her eyes traveled down the dress, she took in the slit that would run halfway up her leg, stopping just above her knee, and how red rhinestones were glued to the dress that went the length of the slit on either side. Those same red rhinestones were also glued around the halter and neckline of the dress. In various places on the bodice the rhinestones appeared, making it look more like a prom dress than something to wear out tonight to a cafÈ. Kaila grudgingly pulled her eyes away from the dress and let it land on the silver handbag that also lay inside the box. She picked it up and smiled at Debbie.

ìDeb! This must have cost a fortune!î she exclaimed, throwing her arms around her best friendís shoulders. Debbie returned the hug, glad to see that she had caused her friend such happiness in a few short hours. She wondered to herself what it would be like later tonight for Kailaís emotions.

ìWell, yeah, maybe it did. But youíre still not done yet,î she replied, pointing to the smaller box. Kaila bent and picked it up, knowing instantly it had to be shoes to wear with the dress. She smiled as she pulled the lid off of the box, and picked up the left shoe. It was clear plastic on the sole, with a strip of silver leather over the top of the shoe. Slides were Kailaís favorite kind of shoes, and she smiled brightly as she put the shoe on her foot. It was a perfect fit. The shoe had nearly a stiletto-type heel, and Kaila had always wanted to wear one for the heck of it, but sheíd never had the money to buy any, or the time to practice wearing them. She picked up the other shoe from the box as she sat down to slip it on as well. As soon as she stood up, she promptly lost her balance and fell back onto the couch.

Kaila let out a loud, whole-hearted laugh, and Debbie smiled brightly until she couldnít help but join in. The girls laughed wildly until Kailaís stomach hurt, and she clutched at it with both hands, hoping to stop the pain.

ìGod, Deb,î Kaila spoke in between her laughter. ìI havenítÖfelt like this inÖages! Thank you so much for everything!î Kaila stood up and started walking away, the dress in her arms.

ìKai, where are you going?î Debbieís eyes narrowed at her friend through her subsiding laughter.

Kaila simply turned her hazel eyes to Debbie before shrugging. ìI have to get dressed donít I?î She smiled before sauntering off, wagging her hips at her best friend suggestively, which only caused Debbie to laugh harder as she pushed herself off of the couch as well.

If Kaila was going to get dressed, then Debbie took it as her cue to get dressed as well. After all, they had quite a night planned.
